Motivation for Fitness

Milly Parker

Where do you find motivation to help get fitness into your busy lives?

Sometimes I find that I cannot wait to get out the door and another I will be using every excuse under the sun to delay until it doesn't even happen! Therefore often I have to tap into various sources of motivation to help me remember to give it a go even on those days it doesn't feel as easy.

Here are some of the things I consider if I need to remind myself what I will be missing out on!

  • FUN - if you enjoy the exercise you do then it is easier to get involved. The emphasis is on the experience rather than the outcome of the activity. Exercising with others is a great example of how to bring fun into the equation! I know that day to day life can be quite serious and adulting/parenting hard and having fun is even more important for balance!

  • HEALTH - we know that by exercising we are improving our physical wellbeing and our mental health. We know that it can improve longevity and help manage chronic conditions. As this affects our quality of life it is often a great motivator. I know that personally if I cave into my excuses I know I will be grumpy about it later.

  • Enhancing physical ability - This could be a physical end goal such as a 10km race that you have entered or having the ability to lift objects easier, be more flexible or improve your skills in your particular sport. The feeling of accomplishment and competence is a real reason to get you to keep to a routine. I certainly know that if I don't keep practicing the sport I love consistently I lose the ability to achieve what I hope to.

  • CONNECTION - I believe that important healthy relationships can be built through the means of exercise. People feel great when they have exercised, the community of a group (such as Beachfit) can really lift you up when needed and it is motivational enough knowing that you get to be amongst a supportive group of people. Some of my best friends have been made through sport and often the best and needed conversations when on a run or a paddle with my exercise buddies.

Do any of these things help you? Let me know....
